Vignettes for the Czech Republic

Since January 2021, vignettes in the Czech Republic are available only in a digital form. Drivers no longer need to bother with buying an adhesive sticker and placing it onto the windscreen of their vehicles. Instead, they can obtain an e-vignette at an online store, sales point, or self-service kiosk.

The Czech e-Vignette system requires a driver to provide the license plate number and indicate the validity start date when a vignette should start.

Drivers of vehicles for which using a digital vignette is mandatory can purchase the required toll all year round. The most convenient way is to do it online by choosing the preferred vignette type, covering the fee and lastly, receiving the e-vignette QR code delivered straight to the email inbox.

Who must have a vignette to use the Czech roads?

The Czech Republic vignette is compulsory for all drivers using vehicle up to 3.5 t with at least four wheels. For trailers, caravans, or motorbikes, there is no need to purchase additional vignettes.

A driver of a vehicle exceeding 3.5 t, such as a camper van or company van, is also subject to the road toll. However, the toll for vehicles over 3.5 t is collected via the online toll system (MYTO CZ). The cost depends on vehicle category, distance driven, number of axles, etc. Drivers must buy a special electronic device (OBU) and install it in their vehicles.

Exemptions: A vignette is not mandatory for certain vehicle categories, including hydrogen, electric, or hybrid car with CO2 emissions not exceeding 50g/km. However, a driver is obliged to declare the vehicle plate number in advance to avoid imposing fines by the control system.

Czech Republic vignette types

The e-vignette must be used for all at least four-wheel vehicles up to 3.5 t. Vehicles over 3.5 t should use the online toll system (MYTO CZ), which requires buying a special device with a GPS locator.

The Czech Republic does not have special road sections where the additional toll would be charged (unlike in Austria).

Vehicles up to 3.5t

There are three types of e-vignette that drivers may choose between:

  • an e-vignette for 10 days
  • an e-vignette for 30 days
  • an e-vignette for 1 year

Vehicles over 3.5t

A driver whose vehicle exceeds 3.5 t must register via the MYTO CZ online toll system and install a special electronic device (OBU) equipped with a GPS locator in the vehicle. The device specifies the location of the vehicle and counts the mileage to estimate the toll to be paid.

Moreover, you should know that there are certain road sections around large cities like Brno or Prague where the vignette requirement does not apply.

Vignette control and penalties

The Police of the Czech Republic, together with the Customs Administration, perform vignette checks aimed at verifying whether a vehicle possesses a valid e-vignette or not or whether a driver is entitled to the toll exemption.

Patrol vehicles equipped with camera systems are located at certain expressways and motorways sections. The system is designed to recognize the vehicle’s number plates and verify if a valid vignette is linked to the vehicle.

Failure to have a valid vignette can lead to imposing strict fines of up to CZK 20,000. In case of unlawful usage of toll exemption and detecting the violation by the system, one may be fined even up to CZK 100,000.

What is more, being entitled to a toll exemption but failing to submit an exemption notice is also subject to a fine of up to CZK 5,000. The same fine amount applies to drivers who fail to inform the State of Transport Infrastructure Fund within 10 business days that the reason required for toll exemption is no longer applicable.

Benefits of an e-vignette

A 100% online purchase

The Czech e-vignette is obtainable entirely online using any Internet-accessed electronic device. A driver can buy it within minutes and receive its confirmation via email.

Free choice of the vignette start date

A driver can freely choose not only a vignette that best matches their driving needs (10-day, 30-day or annual vignette), but also they can select the start date when the e-vignette should be effective.

No need to glue an adhesive sticker

Since an e-vignette is obtainable entirely online and functions only in a digital form, a driver needs to think neither about placing an adhesive toll sticker onto their vehicle’s windscreen nor scratching it off after its expiration.

No need to worry about replacement toll stickers

An e-vignette does not need to be glued to the vehicle’s windscreen. That is why there is no need to bother with obtaining replacement toll stickers in case of windshield breakage.

FAQ

Do I need to have a valid digital vignette to use the Czech roads?

In January 2021, the Czech Republic replaced the self-adhesive toll stickers with a digital vignette system. Currently, to use most Czech motorways and expressways, a driver must possess a valid e-vignette. The vignette requirement is applicable to the drivers of at least four-wheeled vehicles not exceeding 3.5 t (excluding hydrogen cars, electric cars, hybrids, etc.). Vehicles over 3.5 t are also subject to road tolls. Their amount, however, depends on vehicle category, and travelled distance.

Where can I purchase the Czech Republic e-vignette?

An electronic vignette for the Czech Republic can be obtained in three ways: at some sales points, at self-service kiosks, or online. The latest option is the most convenient one since it enables saving plenty of time and obtaining a necessary vignette before entering the Czech toll roads.

Is a sticker toll still applicable in the Czech Republic?

No. Self-adhesive toll stickers were removed in January 2021, and drivers are no longer required to place any sticker on their vehicle’s windshield when driving on the Czech toll road. An electronic vignette is directly linked to the license plate number so that the controller can easily verify whether a vehicle possesses a valid vignette.

How long do I need to wait after paying for my digital vignette before I can use it?

Once we receive your payment, we immediately start the process of your license plate registration. It should take only a couple of minutes. Once the Czech Republic’s official toll provider confirms the registration, you will receive a message with a QR code in your email inbox. You can now start using your electronic vignette!

Should I carry my vignette confirmation when driving the Czech expressways and motorways?

Carrying the confirmation of your purchased vignette for your trip to the Czech Republic is not necessary. However, you can have its digital or physical copy just in case.

When should I obtain an e-vignette for the Czech Republic?

Vignettes for the Czech Republic are sold in electronic form and can be purchased online, at sales points such as Czech Post and some petrol stations, as well as in self-service kiosks located near border crossings. Get your e-vignette online and ensure a worry-free drive through the Czech Republic. When buying your vignette, you will also have the option to select the vignette start date.

Do I need to buy a separate vignette for my trailer?

No additional vignettes are required for trailers, caravans, or motorbikes when using the Czech motorways or expressways.

What is the validity of the Czech Republic digital vignette?

Drivers of vehicles with at least four wheels (up to 3.5t) can buy a vignette for either 10 days, 30 days, or 1 year. A driver can also indicate the start date when the e-vignette should be effective.

Can I transfer my e-vignette for the Czech Republic to another vehicle?

The Czech vignette is not transferable from one vehicle to another, and no changes in the vignette details can be made if it is already activated. However, if your vignette effective date has not yet started, your order can be edited, and you can transfer it to another vehicle.
